What water and fire damage restoration costs
Nobody can price a restoration job from a website, including us. What we can do is show the published national ranges with their sources, and what tends to move a Salt Lake job toward one end. The company that looks at the damage puts your price in writing.

National published figures, not Salt Lake City averages and not a quote. Fixr's fire page lists a lower "national average" in its summary box than in its text; we use the text figure for a multi-room job.
What moves a Salt Lake job up the range
- A finished basement. Fixr's basement range runs to $2,000 to $85,000 because finished space means carpet and drywall below grade, and sometimes a bathroom.
- Sewage. Black water roughly doubles the per-foot extraction price, and porous materials it touched come out.
- Time. A pipe that ran all night while the family was away costs more than one caught in ten minutes.
- Older houses. About 30% of homes in our 34 ZIP codes were built before 1980 (Census ACS 2020-2024). Old plaster and decades of remodels add surprises behind the wall.
- Rebuild work. Drying is a few thousand dollars on most jobs. The rebuild can be several times that, and in Utah it needs a licensed contractor once it reaches $7,000.
What moves it down
- Shutting the water off fast and calling the same day.
- Dry air: outdoor humidity averages 26% in July, which helps exposed materials dry.
- An unfinished basement with a concrete floor.
- Clean water from a supply line rather than a drain.
Questions Salt Lake homeowners ask
How much does water damage restoration cost in Salt Lake City?
Fixr lists water damage restoration at $1,200 to $5,000, with a $3,000 national average. Bob Vila gives $1,305 to $5,707. Clean water from a supply line costs less to extract per square foot ($3.75 to $4.25) than sewage ($7 to $7.50). A finished basement can run far higher: Fixr puts basement water damage at $2,000 to $85,000. Rebuilding is extra.
How much does fire damage restoration cost?
Fixr puts most fire damage restoration jobs at $3,000 to $40,000, with an $11,900 average for a multi-room job, or $4 to $6.50 per square foot. Smoke cleanup alone runs $200 to $1,200 and soot cleanup $400 to $1,700. Rebuilding burned rooms is extra, about $50 per square foot by Fixr's figure.
Why do two restoration quotes differ so much?
Usually because they cover different scopes: one includes the rebuild, one doesn't; one bills drying per piece of equipment per day, one bundles it. Compare them line by line. Our guide to checking a quote walks through it.
