How long water damage restoration takes
Fixr says extraction and drying take at least three days, and that restoration can take several more weeks to months depending on how much was removed. The drying part is fairly predictable. The waiting around it is not.
Stage by stage
| Stage | Typical length | What sets it |
|---|---|---|
| First visit: extraction, demolition, equipment set | Same day or next | How fast you call, and how busy the week is |
| Drying | At least 3 days (Fixr) | Materials, how much was opened up, the air |
| Adjuster visit and approval | Days to weeks | Your insurer's schedule |
| Rebuild | Weeks to months | Scope, permits, materials, finishes |
Why Salt Lake drying can be quick
The air. Outdoor relative humidity at the airport averages 26% in July and 30% in August, and about 149 days a year average below 40%. Exposed framing and subfloor give up water fast in air that dry. In winter the furnace dries indoor air further.

Why it can still drag
- Basements. Concrete slabs and foundation walls hold water and dry slowly, especially under carpet or a floating floor.
- Hardwood. Drying a cupped floor flat can take a week or more, and sometimes it doesn't work.
- Cold snaps. When a freeze hits, every restoration company in the valley gets busy at once.
- The adjuster. Large claims often wait on an inspection before the rebuild is approved.
- Materials. Matching flooring and custom cabinets are the usual long lead items.
How to shorten it
Call the same day. Let the company open up wet walls and pull pad on the first visit. Send the adjuster the moisture logs and photos as soon as you have them. Pick finishes early. Ask whether the restoration company also rebuilds, so there isn't a hand-off gap.
Questions Salt Lake homeowners ask
How long does water damage restoration take?
Fixr says extraction and drying take at least three days, and restoration can take several more weeks to months depending on how much was removed. Waiting on an insurance adjuster or on materials adds time.
Can I stay in my house during restoration?
Often, if the damage is limited to a room or a basement and the power is safe. You may want to leave during demolition of moldy or sewage-soaked material, or if drying equipment runs in bedrooms. After a fire, don't go back in until the fire department says it is safe.
Why is the equipment so loud, and can I turn it off at night?
Air movers and dehumidifiers run day and night because drying depends on constant airflow. Turning them off at night slows drying. Ask the company before you unplug anything.
